A second chance: cancer survivor gives back through health center board service
Rachel Bretbrunner believes a visit to the Monroe Health Center saved her life.
Nearly eight years ago, Bretbrunner, who lives in a small community in Benton County, was uninsured and experiencing persistent pain in her leg. Unsure where to turn, she sought help at the local clinic.
Providers ordered tests that ultimately revealed cancer. She was referred to a specialist for treatment.
Bretbrunner found herself wanting to give back once the treatment was done. In 2022 she joined the board of directors of the Community Health Centers of Benton & Linn Counties (CHC) to help ensure others have access to the same care she received.
“My ‘why’ [for board service] is because I’m still here today,” Bretbrunner said. “I wouldn’t be here today if it hadn’t been for the Monroe Health Center.”
“The Community Health Centers give people the opportunity to get the resources they need to stay alive,” she said.
She is motivated by the opportunity to advocate for accessible health care, particularly in rural communities where options can be limited.
“This work is important to me, especially with rural families having access to health care where normally they wouldn’t,” she said.
Living in Monroe, Bretbrunner understands first-hand the challenges many rural residents face when seeking medical care. The CHCs help close gaps by providing care in areas where traditional commercial medical practices often cannot survive financially.
Serving on the CHC board also benefits Bretbrunner. “I really enjoy it,” she said. “It’s fun and rewarding.”
Her advice to anyone considering volunteer service is simple: “Dip your toes in the water and find out if you like it.”

Hace casi ocho años, Bretbrunner, quien vive en una pequeña comunidad del Condado de Benton, no tenía seguro médico y sufría un dolor persistente en la pierna. Sin saber a quién acudir, buscó ayuda en la clínica local.
El personal médico le hizo pruebas que finalmente revelaron la presencia de cáncer. Fue referida a un especialista para recibir tratamiento.
Una vez concluido el tratamiento, Bretbrunner sintió el deseo de regresarle el favor a la comunidad. En 2022, se unió a la mesa directiva de los Centros de Salud Comunitarios de los Condados de Benton y Linn (CHC, por sus siglas en inglés) para ayudar a garantizar que otras personas tengan acceso a la misma atención que ella recibió.
“La razón por la que formo parte de la mesa directiva es que hoy sigo aquí”, dijo Bretbrunner. “No estaría aquí hoy si no hubiera sido por el Centro de Salud de Monroe”.
“Los Centros de Salud Comunitarios brindan a las personas la oportunidad de obtener los recursos que necesitan para mantenerse con vida”, afirmó.
Le motiva la oportunidad de abogar por una atención médica accesible, especialmente en comunidades rurales donde las opciones pueden ser limitadas.
“Esta labor es importante para mí, sobre todo porque permite que las familias rurales tengan acceso a atención médica donde normalmente no lo tendrían”, comentó.
Al vivir en Monroe, Bretbrunner comprende de primera mano los desafíos que enfrentan muchos miembros de las comunidades rurales al buscar atención médica. Los CHC ayudan a cerrar brechas al ofrecer servicios en áreas donde las prácticas médicas comerciales tradicionales a menudo no logran sobrevivir financieramente.
Formar parte de la mesa directiva de los CHC también beneficia a Bretbrunner. “Realmente lo disfruto”, dijo. “Es divertido y gratificante”.
