Epidemiologist brings public health perspective to Community Health Center Board
Jeff Bethel joined the Board of Directors of the Community Health Centers of Benton & Linn Counties (CHC) not long after being hired on the faculty of the College of Health at Oregon State University in Corvallis. He wanted to get involved in his new community, and he saw it as a chance to bring an important viewpoint to an organization that provides clinical care.
“I’m an epidemiologist,” said Bethel. “My background is in public health, so I bring a population-based health perspective to the board and to the Community Health Centers. I can bring that broader perspective beyond the patient-doctor interaction and really think about the community as a whole and how the Centers and their work impact the entire community.”
Thirteen years later, Bethel is still serving because it is fulfilling in multiple ways. He is in his second term as board chair.
“I enjoy it,” Bethel explained. “I enjoy interacting with the other board members, with the CHC staff. We have an amazing executive director who is expertly guiding us and works with the board really well to ensure the Health Centers are growing, are mindful of challenges and opportunities and that we can serve the entire community.”
Bethel also enjoys learning from the experience of his fellow board members, most of whom are also CHC patients.
“They’ll bring that personal perspective, and they will raise an issue in our meetings… that I hadn’t really thought of. It’s not a part of my health experience or my interactions with health care, and it’s a really important perspective.”
Bethel appreciates that the Community Health Centers are highly connected in the community and to services that the Health Department provides. The CHC is unique as a public entity that provides wraparound care including primary care, dental and behavioral health services.
His board service offers an interesting change from what Bethel does on a daily basis at Oregon State University. His work as a faculty member who teaches, conducts research and advises students is centered around data. Board service allows him to also focus on people — individuals and families.
“This is very different. It’s clinical care and it’s also treating the entire community,” said Bethel. “That really excites me year to year.”

Un epidemiólogo aporta una perspectiva de salud pública a la mesa directiva de los Centros de Salud Comunitarios
Jeff Bethel formó parte de la mesa directiva de los Centros de Salud Comunitarios de los condados de Benton y Linn (CHC, por sus siglas en inglés) poco después de integrarse al cuerpo docente de la Facultad de Salud de la Universidad Estatal de Oregón, en Corvallis. Deseaba participar con su nueva comunidad y vio en ello la oportunidad de aportar un punto de vista importante a una organización que presta servicios de atención clínica.
“Soy epidemiólogo”, señaló Bethel. “Mi formación es en salud pública, por lo que aporto a la mesa directiva y a los Centros de Salud Comunitarios una perspectiva de salud centrada en la población. Puedo ofrecer esa visión más amplia, que trasciende la interacción entre paciente y médico, y reflexionar realmente sobre la comunidad en su conjunto, así como sobre el impacto que los Centros y su labor tienen en toda la comunidad”.
Bethel disfruta de aprender de la experiencia de sus compañeros de la mesa directiva, quienes, en su mayoría, también son pacientes de los CHC.
“(Mis compañeros) aportan esa perspectiva personal y plantean cuestiones en nuestras reuniones… en las que yo realmente no había pensado. No forman parte de mi propia experiencia sanitaria ni de mis interacciones con la atención médica y es una perspectiva realmente importante”.
Bethel valora que los CHC estén fuertemente conectados a la comunidad y a los servicios que ofrece el Departamento de Salud. Los CHC son una entidad pública singular que brinda atención integral, que incluye servicios de atención primaria, odontología y salud conductual.
Su labor en la mesa directiva es para él un cambio interesante respecto a la actividad diaria de Bethel en la Universidad Estatal de Oregón. Su trabajo como maestro, investigador y asesor de estudiantes se centra en los datos; participar en la mesa directiva le permite centrarse también en la gente, individuos y familias.
“Es algo muy distinto. Se trata de atención clínica, pero también de atender a toda la comunidad”, comentó Bethel. “Es algo que realmente me entusiasma año tras año”.
